Our federal government knows that
illness and injury will keep many people from being able to work
before they reach their normal retirement age. The
government helps these workers with Social Security Disability
Benefits.
The government provides Supplemental
Security Income (SSI) for disabled people who cannot work but do
not qualify for Social Security Disability because they have not
worked long enough. Disabled children can also qualify for
SSI.
At Serrano & Serrano, LLC, we
have helped hundreds of injured and sick people throughout
Connecticut and the Springfield - Holyoke -
Northampton - Worcester,
Massachusetts area get Social Security Disability or SSI.
We look at

Top Ten Reasons to Hire a Lawyer for
your Hartford, Waterbury, New Haven, New Britain or other
Connecticut Social Security Disability / SSI Case:
 |
Your chances of
winning your Social Security Disability / SSI case are
greatly increased when you have a disability lawyer. |
 |
A
disability lawyer knows Social Security law and can
use the law to give you your best possible chance of
winning your Social Security Disability / SSI case. |
 |
A disability
lawyer will know which are the facts of your case that
should be emphasized to the Social Security judge who
hears your case. |
 |
What
“disability” means to the Social Security
Administration is different than how most people use
the word. A
disability lawyer understands this. |
 |
A Social Security
lawyer will present your case to the Social Security
Administration or to the Social Security judge in an
organized, logical manner to show how your illnesses
and disabilities, your work history, and your age and
education qualify you for disability benefits. |
 |
Your best chance
of winning your Social Security Disability / SSI case
is at the hearing level.
An experienced Social Security attorney will
have previously attended disability hearings with the
the judge and will know the best way to present the
facts of your case to your particular Social Security
hearing judge. |
 |
It usually takes 6
months to a year to get a hearing date with a Social
Security Disability / SSI judge.
It would be a shame to lose your case, and have
to start your disability application all over, because
you did not have an experienced disability lawyer to
make sure the judge knew the important facts of your
case to approve your disability benefits. |
 |
An experienced
disability lawyer will make sure the Social Security
Administration or the Social Security judge has the
necessary medical records to prove your disability
claim and will emphasize the parts of your medical
records that best prove your Social case. Your medical records may be hundreds of pages long and have
many handwritten pages.
A good Social Security lawyer will make sure
nothing is overlooked in your records that would help
you win your disability benefits. |
 |
An experienced
Social Security Disability / SSI lawyer will prepare
you for the hearing with the Social Security judge by
letting you know which questions most likely will be
asked and which facts you should be sure to tell the
judge about your disability case. |
 | Approximately
3 million applications for Social Security Disability
and SSI are filed each year. An experienced disability lawyer will guide your case through
each step of the process so that your disability case
does not become bogged down due to government
bureaucratic delays. |

Social
Security Disability Statistics |

|
|
According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), 9.4
million people received Social Security Disability
benefits during 2010. This means that out of a total
U.S. population of 309 million people, 3% of all Americans
were receiving disability benefits.
The SSA statistics show that about two-thirds of the
disability cases were for physical disabilities and
one-third for mental disabilities.
The most common reason for disability were problems with
the and connective tissue systems. Twenty-five
percent of all disabled people were in this
category. Musculoskeletal
problems include herniated discs, radiculopathy, lumbar
spine and cervical spine disabilities, neuropathy, and
diseases of the muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and
nerves. Connective
tissue diseases include rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
The next most frequent categories of physical disability
were problems with the nervous system (such as multiple
sclerosis and Parkinson disease) and sense organs
(blindness, deafness), problems with the circulatory
system (congestive heart failure CHF, coronary artery
disease CAD, stroke, heart attack, aneurysm,
cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction), and problems with
the respiratory system (asthma, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease COPD, emphysema, asbestosis).
The most frequent categories of mental disability were
mood disorders (depression or major
depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety
disorder, panic attacks, post traumatic stress disorder
PTSD, obsessive-compulsive disorder OCD, agoraphobia),
intellectual disability (learning disability, dementia,
organic brain disease), and schizophrenia and psychotic
disorders (hallucinations).
In 2009, there were over 2.8 million applications filed
for Social Security Disability. |
