One Too Many  —  How Many Drinks Is Over the Limit

Anyone who drives in Connecticut, or in any other state, with a blood alcohol level greater than 0.08 is breaking the law against drunk driving.  For drivers under 21, the limit is 0.02.

The number 0.08 means that the amount of alcohol in a person's bloodstream is 0.08 percent or 8 grams of alcohol for every 1000 grams of blood.

Your blood alcohol level depends on:

bullet

How much you drink.

bullet

How fast you drink.

bullet

How long you wait after your last drink before driving.

bullet

How much you weigh.

bullet

How much food you have eaten.

Keep in mind it takes about 1 hour for the effects of a drink to wear off.  Having 2 drinks in 1 hour is the same as having 3 drinks in 2 hours.  Alcohol tends to wear off a little slower in women and in persons under 25.  Variation occurs from person to person.

Click here for a link to a web page with charts showing the relationship between the number of drinks and blood alcohol levels.

A blood alcohol level calculator is available online that shows intoxication levels based on number and type of drinks someone consumes.
