Purchase as
much Uninsured / Underinsured motorist coverage as you
can afford. The law in Connecticut
requires that your automobile insurance company
provide you with a type of coverage known as Uninsured
/ Underinsured Motorist (called "UM" for
short) to protect you if you are hurt in an accident
caused by a driver without insurance or with too
little insurance. Purchase as much UM coverage
you can afford. We recommend purchasing at least
$100,000 in UM coverage. To see how UM works,
please see our What If ... section about Uninsured
Motorists.
Purchase
Medical Payment coverage. Most
automobile insurance companies offer Medical
Payment (called "Med Pay" for short)
coverage. This is insurance that pays for
medical bills from a car accident that may not be
covered by your health insurance. Med Pay is not
expensive. Having Med Pay coverage may make it
easier for you to choose the doctor you want to see
after a car accident. We recommend purchasing at
least $10,000 in Med Pay coverage.
Ask your
lawyer for recommendations when choosing an insurance
company. In their advertising,
insurance companies say they will take good care of
you. However, some companies are better than
others at handling claims. An experienced
accident lawyer will know which insurance companies
are better at taking care of you if there is a personal
injury claim. When shopping for
automobile accident insurance, ask an experienced
lawyer for advice before you choose a company.
