What If ... Car Accidents

Your Question:
I was shaken up but I told the police officer that I was okay.  The next day I hurt all over.

Our Answer:

An automobile accident is a terrifying experience.  Tires screech, metal smashes, glass shatters, people scream.  Many times there is blood and broken bones.

Many times, however, injuries are not obvious in a car accident.  Clients will tell us that immediately after the terror and shock of an accident, they were relieved to see that they had no cuts or fractures.  They tell the police officer that they are okay.

Later on    that evening, the next morning  they can hardly move.  They have neck pain and stiffness.  They have a headache.  They have pain in the shoulder or between the shoulder blades.  Their arms or hands feel numb and tingly.  Their low back hurts.  They feel a little dizzy.

This is a very common experience.  Doctors, other medical professionals, insurance companies, lawyers and judges are aware that this is what often happens after a car accident.  This is what the National Institute of Health says about these kinds of whiplash injuries:

Whiplash  -  A soft tissue injury to the neck, also called neck sprain or neck strain.  It is characterized by a collection of symptoms that occur following damage to the neck, usually because of sudden extension and flexion.  The disorder commonly occurs as the result of an automobile accident and may include injury to intervertebral joints, discs, and ligaments, cervical muscles, and nerve roots. Symptoms such as neck pain may be present directly after the injury or may be delayed for several days.

Sometimes, these types of delayed injuries include a traumatic brain injury.  The impact from the accident makes the brain stretch or collide against the inside of the skull, causing the brain to bruise, bleed and swell.

Our experience as automobile accident attorneys in dealing with delayed injuries allows us to present your case forcefully to the insurance company and, if necessary, to a jury.
